The government’s official poverty rate in the United States is around 12%. Recently, the Trump administration’s Council of Economic Advisers decided that this information is inaccurate; according to their “studies,” only 3% of Americans live in poverty. These “findings” are being used to fuel an attempt to get rid of public assistance programs. A bill proposing cuts to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) would leave more than 1 million men, women, and children without food.
